There are many possibilities where internet marketing is concerned. If youíre new to the world of e-commerce and internet business, then you’re undoubtedly searching for ways to promote your website, products, and services. If you’re not new, but are seeking for ways to bring in more traffic to your site, then these tips can give you some ideas.

Internet marketing doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are ways you can bring traffic in to your website for free or cheap. No, these methods require no spamming. Itís possible to promote your website in inexpensive ways without having to resort to spam. They are as follows:

Article Marketing

Distributing articles to ezine directories along with a resource box containing your siteís link is a great way to get your business out there in front of a large, targeted audience. If professional and informative enough, your articles can also be picked up by blogs and newsletters that will also link to your site.

Search Engine Optimisation

What important keywords will someone have to search for at Google in order to find a site such as yours? Think about this and try optimizing your site with those keywords. This requires more than simple meta tags. You need to place those keywords in content throughout your site.

Social marketing and networking

Do you have a Myspace, Facebook, or Twitter account? Why not create a profile for your business as well? Use these social websites, as well as others, to connect with a target audience and to establish yourself as an expert.

Directory Listings

While Dmoz is one of the most popular free directories out there, there are others as well. Submit your website to free directories. Some of them rank really high, and by having your link added to them, your own siteís rank can increase!

Forum and Blog Marketing

If you don’t already have a blog, you need to do so. Create a blog to go along with your site. Update it often with useful information. You can also visit other blogs similar to your own and leave interesting comments (not spam), and sometimes blog owners will allow you to place your link with your comments. As far as forum marketing goes, you need participate often and exchange ideas with other posters. Have your site’s link as your signature line.

These are just a few of the most popular, low-cost methods of internet marketing. No matter which one(s) you choose to try, you need to be consistent. Spend as much time as you can, at least a couple of hours a day, working on one or more of these methods. In the long run, you and your site will be more popular, and youíll begin making all the money youíve ever wanted (or something like that).

In this new series of blog posts we are going to be looking at tips for small businesses who are interested in starting out in E-Commerce. Whilst the whole online retailing thing can seem daunting, the best advice is to start by keeping things very simple and to build from there.

So Tip Number 1 is this: Get informed!

The more you know, the better decisions you will make. Look around for articles about ecommerce in the press, attend a trade show or two, and talk to people who are selling online already. Search on Google for related themes such as ‘ecommerce’ and ‘shopping carts’, find some informative web sites, and read up about the subject!

Tip Number 2: Make sure ecommerce is right for you

If you are selling goods that customers do not need to touch, taste or smell before buying, at a fixed price, then the web is the place to be – especially if your products are hard for customers to find by conventional means. The web can offer your customers the convenience of being able to shop when it suits them, without having to travel or queue. And it offers a level of automation that can help drive down your costs, so you can offer keen prices into the bargain. You can check out the competition by looking on Google for some of the products that you plan to sell.

The article continues “The popularity of Twitter, the micro-blogging service used by President Obama …and tennis player Andy Murray has risen so much that it has seen its visitor numbers increase by nearly 1,000 per cent among UK users.
Latest figures show a 974 per cent increase in traffic, jolting Twitter from the 2,953rd most popular site among UK users to the 291st most visited by mid-January.

We are all being affected by the credit crunch – to a greater or lesser extent. Business may be slowing, costs may be rising. Who knows where it will end? A time of uncertainty like this can be very stressful for smaller businesses that rely on a positive cash flow to stay afloat.

So what should your marketing approach be at a time like this? Certainly there is a temptation to cut back on the marketing budget or even to freeze it completely, as well as a number of other costs across the business. However, all the expert opinion I have read about best practice at a time like this reconfirms my own opinion – you freeze your marketing budget at your own peril! So, to this end, a medium term view is just as important as the short term view – how are we going to get through the next year v how are we going to get through the next couple of months?

So… you’ve made a sensible decision – you’re going to keep marketing, maybe at a reduced level until the period of economic uncertainty passes. Now… what should you do?

My first recommendation is TRACK EVERYTHING! Knowledge is power and right now that may make all the difference between staying afloat and going under. If you know which campaigns are performing – leading to the best conversion rates and the lowest Cost per Acquisitions, then you know where to focus your budget.

Second recommendation is it’s TIME TO TARGET! Get very specific with your campagins – by sector, by size of client, by geographical area. Increased granularity leads to increased control. And increased control should lead to lower costs.

Thirdly – INTEGRATE OFFLINE AND ONLINE CAMPAIGNS. The synergy that happens when an offline campaign is backed up by online efforts can be incredible – the value being easily more than the sum of the parts. Don’t miss this trick now.

The good news? Well, I’d say that this cloud does have a silver lining. What’s that you may ask? Well, it’s simple. Difficult times really call for you to get serious about your digital campaigns – optimising and tweaking them to make sure you squeeze every ounce of value out of them. Now, when the economic troubles pass and things start to build again, you will be extremely well positioned to take advantage and should be able to steal a march on your competition!
