Social media is fast becoming a very powerful force on the internet. Social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, along with Flickr, YouTube, LinkedIn and an ever growing list of ever more imaginative social networks covering areas such as films, books, business, sport – the possibilities are endless. One thing is for sure and that is the need to communicate – and by that we mean a two-way conversation. Interactivity is the name of the game.
As with any emerging phenomenon, the exact meanings and difference between terms such as ‘social media’, ‘social marketing’ and so on are unclear and are used variously by different parties. What is much more important is to understand the concepts behind any particular terminology. LS Digital Media have been involved in blog marketing, and the WordPress platform in particular for some years now. We can share our best practice experience with you so that your internet marketing campaigns have the best chance of performing the way you want them to.
What is Social Bookmarking?
Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata.
When users “socially bookmark” a page, all it means is that they save the link to that page so they can come back to it to share it with others, comment on it, read it, link to it on their website or blog, etc. For marketing purposes, social bookmarking carries with it a level of trust as the sites that rank well have been voted for, not by faceless ‘bots’ but by fellow humans and often by friends of the person who is searching.
In the social bookmarking system, these saved links (ie, bookmarks) are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains. The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine.
