A very recent announcement on the official Google blog entitled ‘A New Approach to China’ seems to suggest that Google have now lost their patience with the Chinese government’s human rights abuses. Of course the post does not say this directly but, if one reads between the lines, the message is clear.

What the blog post does say explicitly is that the company was “no longer willing to continue censoring our results” on their Chinese search engine Google.cn. The company seems to have taken particular issue with the fact that “we have evidence to suggest that a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.”

LS Digital Media applauds Google for taking the moral high ground, for putting principles before profit. Okay, Google aren’t perfect but at least they are trying to do good and there are a very many companies, organisations and governments that could take a leaf out of their book. Well done the Big G!

As a fully paid up member of the Android users’ club, I am continuing my occasional series of posts on essential Android apps – the ones that I, at least, can’t live without.

Today we are looking at a very simple application called Facebook Sync.

One of my favourite features of Android is the fact that the phone uses my Google contacts – the very same ones that I have in my Google mail. I like the fact that this acts as a built-in back up solution should I lose my phone – I don’t lose any of my contact details. They are still there waiting for me next time I log in to Google Mail (or Google Apps in my case).

Now the one thing that would surely put the cherry on the icing on the cake would be to have an image associated with my contacts so that a picture of whoever it is that is calling appears in the window. Not essential for anything, no sir, but a very nice touch none-the-less.

What Facebook Sync does is to bring images to all your contacts as long as you are friends with them on Facebook. When you open the app, there’s an check box at the bottom that asks if you want to replace non-Facebook photos that you might already have in your contacts. All that’s left to do is tap the “Start friend photo sync” and away you go. A web window opens up in which you will need to enter in your Facebook login info to allow that app to gain access to your friends list.

Once it starts the sync process, if shows you each friend picture that it is syncing to your contacts. Once Facebook Sync has finished going through all your friends and contacts, it gives you a little readout of how many contact entries were synced.

Facebook Sync can be found easily in Android Market. I highly recommend this simple but oh-so-effective app.

Google Wave is a new project by Google, still in development, yet set for release later this year. It will be an integrated communications and collaboration platform. This means that the one web-based application will be able to handle email, chat, photo-sharing and collaborative editing features – as currently seen in Google Docs. The documents will be handled in ‘waves’ which have been described by Google as part ‘conversation’ and part ‘document’.

This seems to be something of a genre-changing move by Google and highlights the company’s drive to be at the cutting edge of online technical innovation. The keyword here is integration. Google believes that by integrating a number of tools into one platform, productivity and collaboration will increase, and hence the value-add to the user.

Users will be able to create ‘waves,’ and add documents and collaborators to it. The system will feature concurrent rich-text editing, as well as email and IM-like messaging functions. Lars Rasmussen, one of the co-founders and lead engineers behind this project, especially stressed the real-time nature of Wave, where edits to a wave, be they new messages or edits in a document, appear immediately on the screens of all participants.

This post was inspired by ReadWriteWeb’s article: Google Wave: Google Tries to Reinvent Email.
