About this deal

It's recommended to buy a baby car seat before your baby is born if possible. It's important to buy a seat that fits your car and is suitable for a newborn. The road safety officer at your local council can give you detailed advice about child car seats. You can find your local council on GOV.UK. Weighing 9kg, it is light for a forward-facing toddler car seat but heavy enough that you won't want to be carrying it too far. And being able to travel with it as hand luggage would mean you won't have to worry about hiring a car seat or braving a taxi without one at your destination. Your car must have Isofix connectors for you to be able to use an i-Size car seat. At the moment there are only a few i-Size seats on the market in the UK and not all cars have Isofix connectors.

Several years ago the kind folks at Safe Ride 4 Kids sent us a Ride Safer Delight travel vest to review, and it hasn’t left our travel kit since. The Ride Safer travel vest (“Delight” has been dropped with the latest Ride Safer travel vest Gen 5 release) is completely different than the travel car seats above. i-Size is an European safety standard for baby and child car seats. It's part of regulation ECE R129, which will eventually replace the old safety regulation R44/04. The idea is that all car seats will eventually meet the tighter i-Size safety standards.

The thought of not having appropriate car seats makes us really anxious so I researched and tried out a few portable car seat for toddlers. In this blog post I compare 4 options of portable travel car seats for toddlers and tell you which we bought and why. Travel car seat for toddlers options The reclining modes offer even more comfort to your child during road trips, while the harness and headrest are easy to adjust to deliver the best fit. The double cupholders are dishwasher-safe and fit most standard-sized sippy cups. And, since messes are part of taking a family road trip, the seat pad can easily be taken off and machine washed (without uninstalling the entire set-up). But the best feature of this travel car seat is that it can fit children up to 100 pounds and transforms into a booster seat, so you are basically investing in a car seat that will be with your kid for most of their childhood.

Unfortunately, while it’s suitable for babies over 9kg and nine months like Minnie, it instantly became apparently it wasn’t going to work. Without a booster seat, the impact shield slotted in fine but she was lost and uncomfortable at the bottom. With a mini booster seat, we couldn’t squeeze the bar in without squashing her. Your child's safety is always a top priority, so keep them secure on road trips with our range of car seats. While driving, it’s extremely important to make sure your child is seated in the rear seat and even more important to use the right car seat. If it’s your first time investing in a child’s car seat, it’s essential to bear in mind that they are designed for certain sizes, so make sure you choose the right size for your child. And if you need more information before selecting the right one, have a look at our car seat guide. Baby car seat First, it’s heavy compared to other infant car seats. The official Doona weight listing is 14lbs (some reviewers say it’s more like 16lbs). Most infant carriers weigh more like 10lbs, but of course they don’t have a whole stroller built in. If you prefer a lightweight infant car seat, you’ll find great options here.Since this article is all about folding car seats, portability is the name of the game! You want a car seat that folds small enough to take out for the day so that you have it when you need it. So some of the options on this list may not be the lightest in their classes, but they’re the best for putting in the overhead bin of an airplane or toting around the city. It’s not a lightweight option, so I doubt I’d take it on my travels, but I’m not convinced many Group 1 seats are particularly good for that – finding a lightweight Group 1 car seat that also ranks well for safety seemed impossible, certainly to get something genuinely lightweight enough to take on a plane but still score well enough to use every day.

We decided against this option though as we spend all this money to keep them safe at home, why risk it when abroad?! Arrange for the travel company to provide seats However, I’ve done my research and a travel car seat option would be better for both than nothing at all. Portable car seats for toddlers in the UK Second, while the Doona always brings its wheels (and their weight) the Evenflo Shyft DualRide can leave the wheels behind on the car seat base or at home if you don’t anticipate needing them. That brings the weight of the car seat itself down to just 8-9 pounds – in line with many other car seats on the market. But it’s nice to have the flexibility to use the wheels when you want them and leave them behind when you don’t. Do you have isofix? If so, will your existing base work with a new model as buying a new base boosts the price considerably.

Will I need a base to fit the seat into my car?

After asking around and doing some googling and it seems there are 4 top options for travel car seats for toddlers on the UK market at the moment: Inevitably, having made our decision, the rules are changing and babies around Minnie’s age are likely to be most affected although the new laws won’t apply instantly. Our three year old has good extended rear facing car seats in both our car (Cybex Sirona, you can see our review here) and in her grandad’s car (Concord Reverso – see our video review here). It is one area where we don’t try to scrimp, even for grandparent’s cars. To us, it’s just not worth it. Choosing a car seat can be a challenge—but at Smyths the Baby Room, you can find a wide range of child car seats for every age, stage and budget.
