About this deal

Sleeve joint: A method by which an alloy rim is joined to form a circle. Sleeve joints are a form of rivet; they are cheaper to produce than a welded joint Rim: The outward hoop of the wheel that holds the tyre and acts as a braking surface for rim brakes Nipples: At the rim end (usually), the spokes thread into a special nut called a nipple. Most wheels can be straightened (trued) by adjusting spoke tension via the nipple. Improvements can include improved ride quality, faster average speeds or just a lower weight – something that helps with both acceleration and deceleration.

The scale for each feature is 1-5 points, where 5 is the best. The rating can be retrospectively adjusted based on the comparison with other wheelsets. Double-wall rim: This refers to the internal cross-section of a rim. Where a single wall rim has one layer of material for the spokes to connect to and the tyre to sit on, a double wall rim adds an additional level of material separating the two. This additional layer creates a box type section, which greatly aids in rim stiffness and wheel durability At 54mm deep, you do have to be a bit more careful on windy days, should a gust catch your front wheel. However, we didn’t experience any problems with handling. As with other Cadex wheels, the 22.4mm internal width helps with both of those situations. Widening the base of the tyre helps it flow better into the rest of the wheel, for better aero performance, but it also makes for a rounder profile that's more stable. Descending stability is a big advantage to all the Cadex wheels and that hasn't changed. Enve has one-upped Cadex with an even wider 25mm internal but Cadex has made its own subtle changes with the increased bead width. I can't put my finger on any of those design details during the ride but these are high-volume wheels with a comfortable, stable, ride. They do well descending, they do well in crosswinds, and as someone who likes to feel in control of the bike, I appreciate it. Because rims on rim brake bikes wear out over time with braking, particularly if you’re riding through winter, having a cheaper set of wheels for training can extend the life of your race wheels. They compare very well with wheels from the likes of Hunt and Scribe, which always tend to score highly for quality, performance and price. SRAM’s solution is the XD driver for off-road and the XDR driver for road use, which are essentially just new freehub standards that enable the use of cassette cogs down to a tiny 9t. When I put together my comparison of Enve vs Cadex vs Roval, covering the personality of the three big wheel releases this year, I dubbed the Cadex 50 Ultra the efficiency monster. The truth is, that's only half the story. There's no doubt that Cadex has produced an efficient wheel. The Cadex 50 Ultra is aerodynamically faster than its deeper 65mm wheel. It's also so light that it's within a few grams of its 36mm offering. In the context of the Roval and the Enve wheels, these are the efficiency kings.

Rim: Sitting on the outside of the wheel, the rim holds the tyre and provides a braking surface for rim-brake-equipped bikes. CRC were doing them at a fair old discount when I got them so given the mileage I've put through them they're fantastic value for money. The sort of wheels you don't mind using for regular riding - it's not like a set of Lightweights or something where you'd only use them on the sunniest days and smoothest roads - and I'd be happy racing them too. Partly becasue they're easily good enough for it and partly because they're not so insanely expensive that I'd be terrified of crashing them. Cadex wheels have always been among my favourites and each time the brand releases a new option in its lineup, it builds on past success. As the Cadex engineers and designers get better at producing a signature style of wheel, the experience gets better. For all but the most specialised of needs, the Cadex 50 Ultra is the best wheel the brand makes and one of the best wheels on the market. Tubular glue: A specific glue used to bond a tubular tyre with a tubular rim. There are different kinds of tubular glue for aluminium and carbon rims Three-cross: This refers to the lacing pattern of the spokes where each spoke crosses past another three times. This pattern is most common on 32 or higher spoked wheels

Spoke: Wire rods that connect the hub to the rim. They can be made from steel, stainless steel (most common), titanium, aluminium or carbon fibre Two-cross: This refers to the lacing pattern of the spokes where each spoke crosses past another twice. It’s most common on wheels with 20-28 spoke counts Radial lacing: Where the spoke leaves the hub and meets the rim in a straight line. This is the easiest form of wheel building and results in the shortest length (lightest weight) spoke possible. This style is popular for rim brake front wheels, but does not resist torque appropriately for use on the driveside of a rear wheel or with disc brakes The VeloElite Carbon Wide 350-50 wheelset is a great choice if you’re looking for your first set of deep-section wheels or on a budget and you don’t want to shell out for a big-name brand.
