About this deal

Our favourite non-fiction picture book author Gail Gibbons has a beautifully illustrated book all about owls. Perfect for you to share with your toddlers and preschoolers and learn a bit more about these fantastic creatures. National Geographic Readers: Owls These adverts enable local businesses to get in front of their target audience – the local community. But, sadly, these are not enough on their own. It's great that we're starting to see more YA books promoting healthy attitudes towards sex. I'm just still waiting for some really good ones.

Planning for the shop began last autumn, with the whole family involved in transforming the premises.

The Enigma of the Owl is one of the few very detailed yet captivating books on owls. Mike Unwin wrote the book with unique photographs by David Tipling. Mike Unwin has studied the birds for years and describes the behavior, breeding patterns, diet, and cultural superstitions of various owl species. When you can’t sleep, a quiet activity might be just the thing to help you get ready to rest. Try keeping an adult coloring book like this one next to your bed with some colored pencils. There are thousands to choose from, but I like this narrative one by Daria Song because it’s so dreamy. It follows the story of a little girl who is woken in the middle of the night to go on an adventure with a magical train conductor. My favorite little detail? She is wearing an eye mask as a headband for part of the story. Covers 19 species of owl in North America, put together by wildlife photojournalist and nature educator, Mark Wilson. Equally, Kring views the idea that everyone should be in the office at the same time as a hangover from the industrial revolution, when most people worked in factories. “It’s this mentality of ‘I see you therefore you’re working,’” she says. “But that’s not the case when you’re a knowledge worker. It’s more about the quality of your work than how much you’re working.”

Part of the reason for this prejudice is that sleep science is the missing piece of the public health puzzle. Our culture mistakenly associates sleeping little and rising early with virtue. It is often extolled as a habit of successful people: for instance in the fascination with Margaret Thatcher’s four-hour rest, or articles about “sleepless-elite” CEOs who start their days with a 4am jog. Yet this belies a glaring inconsistency: around eight hours of good-quality sleep is essential for better health for almost everybody. He had large boy hands, all sinewy and latticed with faint blue veins, and long, slender fingers. More beautiful bones. I desperately wanted to trace my fingers over them—which was insane. And stupid.” We’re brainwashed to believe that early birds are happier, more successful, more disciplined and all-round better human beings than night owls. The hours when I feel most alive are considered ‘ungodly’ and likened to a vampire’s schedule. Owls like myself internalise this message, and we believe we must be lazy, depressed and irresponsible.”Night Owl Books is an independent bookshop in East Linton, East Lothian, which was founded in April 2022. I used to manage a bookshop in London and worked in one as a Saturday job as a teenager and I absolutely loved it.” I didn't like Bex's mum, her actions, excuses or how easily it was all dismissed. In fact both sets of parents were highly unlikeable! Especially if you are purchasing a book for a child, it is a great idea to find a book with illustrations or unique photography. This helps to visualize the information and create a mental image of the birds you are reading about. Research This children’s book was written by Laura Marsh, an author who has published over 20 books as an author and editor, including several for the National Geographic Readers series.

But Professor Espie thinks the tide is turning. When he first qualified as a doctor 40 years ago, exercise, smoking and diet weren’t taken seriously by the medical profession. “No self-respecting doctor would run clinics encouraging people to lose weight or get fit,” he says. “For many years, we’ve been advocating for sleep and it’s been falling on deaf ears. But nowadays there’s a lot being written about sleep in the media and it’s coming into the public consciousness. That’s hugely important.” Would it have been an issue if it was four guys?” After all, I’d known plenty of guys our age who’d slept with twice as many girls. Double standards were the worst. For night owls, the expectation that they should adapt their behaviours can also be frustrating outside work. Lisa Akker, who is 60, has been a night owl her whole life and thinks the tendency runs in her family. “It’s caused problems in my marriage. My husband doesn’t understand why I can’t change my sleep times so I can be more of a lark. My cousin is always making fun of my sleeping late proclivity; she’s the quintessential illustration of the early bird getting the worm, and prizes that.”
